Want a Discount on Auto Insurance? Get Engaged!
Posted on March 24, 2008 by Her and tagged insurance
I've written before about how much i love our auto insurance company, Country Companies. Now I can add another reason to my list: an engaged couple's discount! A while ago, I notified our agent that we were engaged. She said that if I called her back six months before the wedding, she could give us their engaged couple's discount. I put a reminder on my calender and called her back when we reached six months. Ten minutes later, she had cut our annual auto insurance bill by almost $40. She even credited our account because we had pre-paid for the next month. If you are engaged, ask your insurance company if they offer a similar discount.
Have you ever gotten an insurance discount based on a life change?

you know, i never have (other than when it was bundled with a boyfriend's into our house insurance), but i noticed the various "ding" schedules that came with my last policy - like, what hit you take for getting a ticket, etc. and it struck me as SO weird that there were separate schedules for single man, married man, single woman, married woman. as i recall, a married woman was penalized more than a single man, but a single woman was penalized less than a single or married man...

When we got married my husband's car insurance premium went down quite a bit, mine not so much. Unfortunately, he had an accident premium so we didn't fully reap the marriage benefit until last summer.
When I got married and added my wife's car - our total premium went up $10 a 6-month period. That was pretty sweet.
We also get discounts for having gone to private schools for college!
When I switched off my Dad's insurance policy onto my own with the same company I got to keep his "length of service" discounts. So in their books I have had auto insurance longer than I've been alive! That is a pretty sweet discount!
We have received insurance discounts for being an alum of a certain university, for getting married, and for my military service. There are probably other out there that we simple don't know about! The insurance companies should get the word out, and they would be selling more policies...

My husband's credit is horrible, and my insurance company does a credit check before insuring, so he's still with Geico.
The only discount we recently received on my car insurance was a multiple policy discount since we also carry the insurance on my rings through the same company.
