Upromise is Now Helping to Pay my Student Loan

Upromise has recently partnered with Sallie Mae, a big student loan company who I happen to have most of my student loans with. I have also had a Upromise account for over a year. The result of the partnership is that now Upromise will now make automatic quarterly transfers of the money in my Upromise account to make a payment toward my Sallie Mae loans whenever my Upromise account has more than $25.00 in it. By my estimation, this will probably happen twice a year, paying off about $50 of my loans each year. Not bad for a hassle-free program! For more information visit the Sallie Mae page on the Upromise web site.

How often do you "earn" stuff on Upromise? I just signed up last month (based on this blog's recommendation actually!), but it seems like I haven't earned anything yet. Am I just not buying the right things?

I too signed up and haven't earned anything! After I read one of the posts an this blog a couple months ago, I signed up in February and haven't earned a penny. I am patiently waiting b/c I know I bought from an online merchant from the site.

Jenny/Philskaren,
To answer your questions, we have earned over $73 with Upromise since we started - and we have never purchased something just to get the Upromise money. First, I would check to make sure that the credit cards and store member cards you use are registered correctly with Upromise. Second, try reviewing the list of participating products on the Upromise website. It could be that you just don't buy the brands they have partnered with. Finally, be patient. It can take a few weeks for the credit to post on the Upromise account (I have always gotten credit eventually). You can also review the list of participating Upromise restaurants, and try to choose one of those for your next meal out. Happy saving to you!

My wife and I have actually been Upromise members for over 3 years now and have roughly $1,500 in our account. I'm putting it towards my kids education. There are a few things you can do that really work. The first is to shop online at Upromise. Nearly everyone we shop with is there and the savings can really add up. I'd say that is easily a third of our savings. We also have the Upromise Citi credit card which gives us huge savings. The rest has come from the occasional dining with their restaurant network, some grocery and gas savings here and there and with other partners like Bed Bath and Beyond. The last part that can really grow your savings is Family & Friends. We have my parents, sister and some other relatives and friends all linked to our account. Any money they earn in Upromise transfers over to us. Overall, if you set your account up right and do the things that make sense, it really can work for you. I can't say enough about it. The one other area that can earn you a lot of money is the real estate and mortgage program. If you are selling your house, buying another one and need financing, Upromise can help do that. You could earn anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to $3,000 plus. I don't think most people know much about it as its buried in there site and you have to look for it. Hope this helps.

I think we've been a Upromise member for almost 4 years. We joined just to help pay off my husband's undergrad student loans (deferred while he's in graduate school). Do make sure that your store cards are entered correctly and that you're using your store cards for every purchase! Then if you want to test it, buy something like Coke 2L or Cottonelle toilet paper, a product you know will get you a credit. Keep watching, it seems like it takes a month or two to clear. The most we've earned though is from our Citibank Upromise credit card. We pay the bill completely EVERY month so we're not paying interest. We use this credit card for everything - groceries, gas, doctor's bills. Any company that sends us a bill - I try to call them and see if I can pay over the phone with my credit card (for no extra fee). Our account is about $500 and $475 is from Citibank! :)
