This (Frugal?) American Life

We've previously discussed how much we love the NPR/Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ) show This American Life. If you like the show and haven't been living under a rock you know that the televison version of the show will be premiering tonight on Showtime.

I have never been a subscriber of premium cable channels in my life. I had no idea of how much a subscription to Showtime would be. $5 a month? $25 a month?

So I call DirecTV (who has stellar customer service) and I ask about getting a subscription to Showtime.

$12 a month.

I'm wasn't quite sure I wanted to pay that much for only one show. Of course I asked...

"Do you have any specials going on right now?"

The rep put me on hold for a minute and came back on the line. He said they could give me Showtime for $2 a month, for the next six months.

Sold. At least for six months.

Get in my TiVo, Ira Glass! (Oh, and TBH asked if Ira Glass was hot; I don't think he's a very attractive man [you know the saying - perfect face for radio], but I think Her would disagree...)

(on a side note, is there anything else worth watching on Showtime? Bueller?)

Well, he's definitely not a traditional George Clooney type, but I still think Glass is quite a cutie!

I <3 Dexter and Weeds, as well as having very much enjoyed the first episode of this show on demand. I can't wait for more!

If you call DirecTV back, they will usually give you two premium packages for $2 each for 6 months. Entourage will be on HBO again in the beginning of April... it's my weakness.

Time for me to call DirecTV...

I couldn't get Showtime without basically tripling my cable bill (I'm on limited basic), but when I found out about The Tudors, I almost reconsidered.

How does Her feel about Jonathan Rhys Meyers? Because that's a pretty big selling point in my eyes.

I love Ira and I can't wait to see the show! If you want a preview, you can go to the "This American Life" webpage and view some trailers, which are cool.

Correction: This Americna Life is not an NPR Program. NPR has nothing to do with This American Life. It's produced by Chicago Public Radio and distributed by Public Radio International.

I just called DirecTv and they offered me Showtime free for 3 months and HBO for $3/month for 6 months. The Sopranos starts April 8th, can't miss it, and what a great deal!

Him - you're right. DirecTv's customer service is fabulous. I don't mind calling them for anything, and that says a lot!

Definitely check out Weeds. I thought it was a horrible premise for a show, but once I watched it, I was hooked!
